The
Cornels are mentioned already in documents from the
XIIIth century, together with James I the Conqueror. Pere Cornel was the
personal tutor of King James. His son Luis is buried in
Valencia, just after the conquest of the town. His
grandsons become Lords of Alfajarín and other villages
in Aragon. And still everybody is turning their eyes
towards Cerler.
Pedro Cornel,
bishop of Tarazona in the XVth century, requests to be
buried in the ground of his ancestors, in the Casa Cornel
of Cerler. Juan Manuel Cornel, bishop of Barbastro in the
XVIIIth century, returns to the house regurarly, and
orders the construction of an oratory for his withdrawal.
The branch of the
Cornel, through the centuries, extends and spreads.
Antonio Cornel becomes Minister in the XVIIIth century,
others join the army, become clergymen and Mariquita
Cornel proves her nobility and purity of blood in order
to enter the convent of Sigena and later she becomes
abbess of the monastery. The ones who stay behind in the
house, live according to their times and those are the
ones who maintain the property.
Shortage and
prosperity, traditions, wars: all the thoughts and
desires remain reflected in the family tree of the Casa
Cornel.
